Roller shutters in Bristol

Lights in the evening on the Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol

Bristol is a city full of character, with lots of trade and economic activity. As one of the southwest's leading security roller shutter suppliers and installers, we're regularly carrying out roller shutter works in Bristol.

The city of Bristol is a major distribution centre of southwestern England, as well as a centre for education. With a good 450,000 inhabitants Bristol is the UK's 10th largest city, just after Manchester, Edinburgh and Liverpool. In England's Southwest, Bristol is the largest city (with Plymouth coming in second).

Case study - Roller shutter installations at Glassfields in Bristol

Looking up from the bottom of the Leonards Hotel at Glassfields in Bristol

Over the years we have installed many roller shutters in and around the Bristol area.

We work across the UK for Kier Construction and worked with them at their Glassfields project in the centre of Bristol.

Leonardo Hotels, one of Europe's largest and fastest-growing hotel chains, had the hotel newly built in Bristol.

Car park and staff entrance roller shutters

Two shutters were required, one on the car park and one on the main staff entrance. On the face of it both shutters seemed to be easy but making sure we could meet the architects specification as well as making the shutters work for the building was a bit of a challenge.

Open type security shutter for car-park

The car park entrance under the hotel needed to have an open type security shutter for ventilation. But it also had to be automatically operating and be able to open and close multiple times an hour, especially in the morning. This required a motor able to handle that amount of work (typical roller shutters usually open and close twice a day, and so can have a lighter duty motor).

With much planning, all safety devices and a 100% rated motor we installed one of our CL200 Chainlink roller shutters.

Car park roller shutter health & safety

Car park roller shutter require extra care around health & safety such as a sensitivity edge and photo-cells. Here you can read more about roller shutter safety in use.

Classic roller shutter for staff entrance

The main staff entrance had a simpler, more classic roller shutter solution, because it only required to be closed off for overnight security. We added a cut-out for the post (which also enabled our engineers to play hide and seek).

Car-park roller shutters have special requirements that need additional planning and safety precautions. For example, the shutter shouldn't close if there is an obstacle like a person or a car underneath it. We achieve this with a bottom-rail sensitivity strip that detects if there is anything below the shutter.

Where possible the hotel used sustainable materials throughout the build and it's now BREEAM certified, meaning it's built in line with the sustainability in mind and designed to help protect natural resources. This fits in with Bristol's ecologically friendly and environmentally aware approach to development.

The hotel also tries to use local produce and suppliers as much as possible, so we're proud to have worked on this project for the rolling security shutters.

An inspiring city

Bristol is an inspiring city. It has two universities with well over 50,000 students in total. And it's very green, with over 400 parks and gardens.

The city is also environmentally friendly and attracts many young people. And considering the number of museums, theatres, amount of live music gigs and the quantity of street art, Bristol is also a very artistic place. For example, Europe's biggest street art festival, Upfest, is held in Bristol.

But which county is Bristol in?

Not part of Somerset, nor of Gloucestershire, Bristol is actually a county of its own... as well as a city (just like New York).

Fun fact

The first ever bungee jump took place from the Clifton Suspension Bridge in 1979, with members of the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club.

Bristol's international character

Bristol has a very international character. Being a harbour city with a large international port where trades from across the globe come and go is of course a big part of this.

Next to that Bristol hosts Europe's biggest hot air balloon event. There, during four days in August, you can watch a colourful show of balloons, and even take a ride in one to see the city from high above the ground. It's a sight not to be missed if you happen to be in the area. However, for roller shutters we prefer to stay with both our feet on the ground.

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is Europe's largest annual meeting of hot air balloons. Each year it attracts over a hundred hot air balloons from across the globe, that take off at dawn and at dusk.

Bristol Airport and airport security shutters

Bristol has an international airport that handles tens of thousands of flights each year. At airports security is an important issue, which is why contractors like us, working airside and landside, need additional qualifications.

Because airport security shutters are one of our specialities, our installation engineers have taken extra airport training.
